What is Your REALITY?

Sample Game

“I am  convinced that God does not play dice.” –Albert Einstein

“Not only does God play dice, but... he sometimes throws them where they cannot be seen."- Stephen Hawking

Lets say you and three friends get together for a Friday night of gaming. All chip in for pizza. After a quick run to the store for beverages, you all sit down and start character creation. Going through the necessary steps, you finish your character just as the pizza arrives. Everyone gets out his or her dice, someone turns on some background music, and the game master begins the story. The players are the GM, you, Joe [JC], and Vanessa [VR].

***The following is a sample from Legion: URPG v1.5 End of Days, bear in mind that the GM is actually called a Judge***

GM: It is a dark and stormy night, the brisk wind blows vagrant newspaper about in a whirlwind dance of excitement. The air smells like mud, but the undertone of rain brings a lifting resonance to the normal disparity. Downtown is close to being under military duress and martial law will most likely be announced soon. That doesn’t keep people from rioting any less, and as you walk down the streets; keeping close together for safeties sake, you see the city erupting about you. Broken glass crunches under your shoes, the smells of sweat and smoldering wood fill your noses and will be eventually cleansed by the rain. Would you all please roll an Observation check.

You: How do we do that?

GM: Look for your Wits Attribute…if you see the Observation skill, then you need to add both Wits and Observation together. If there is no Observation skill then just roll Wits. The difficulty is 3. You need to roll 3 dice each [d6 or six sided dice] and if your roll is under you target number then you succeeded.

(All roll)

You: I failed.

JC: I made it …barely.

VR: I made it!

GM: The two of you who made it dodge swiftly out of the way, too fast for [You] to register as a huge oak desk hits the cement less than a foot from you all. All of you feel the velocity and wind of its descent. It lands with a solid crack, sending debris flying [rolls dice], there is no damage to anyone. Sirens can be heard in the distance, as well as gunshots and screams. You, roll me a dodge please. Agility and Dodge, Diff of 3.

You: [rolls dice] Whew… made it!

GM: And just in time as a rather large man of approximately 300 pounds slams into the desk and debris with a severe thud!! He is a mangled mess and his clothing is splotched in crimson wounds that are now smearing thanks to the rain. Above you someone yells down something incoherently. What do all of you do?

TC: I look around… with a grimace check the dead guy’s pockets for money and jewelry.

VR,You: (in unison) That’s just cold!

GM: (smiling) You find nothing of real value, save for the seeping blood and a shredded tie. He smells bad, but the sirens getting louder and closer distract you almost as much as some young kid wrenching one of the legs from the desk and smashing the nearest window of a bakery. Someone barking into a megaphone can be heard in the distance, but the words are indiscernible. Your clothes are getting fairly drenched and I want everyone to make another observation roll please. (a 4 players roll)

All but GM: We made it.

GM: You all notice through the haze of another fire that just broke out, approximately 30 yards away, an elderly lady in a new Nissan Skyline being accosted by 4 punks. They are all dressed in some schizoid fashion with nothing matching, and nothing the same length. Right behind the three of you a pay phone rings…

VR: We need that car! I am cold and wet, and we need that car.

JC: Well… My character pulls his 9mm from its holster and checking the safety, lowers it to his side.

You: Watching the situation carefully, I slide over to the pay phone and pick it up.

VR: Huh?! (pretends to shiver , rubbing arms)

GM: Let us start the combat sequence, look at your Initiative score. The punks have 3’s, except for the one currently fending off the old ladies purse, who has a 4.

You: I have a 6.

JC: I have a 5.

VR: I have a 4.

GM: I will count down from 10 to 1. This represents one full turn or approx. 60 seconds. With each phase representing about 6 seconds each. You may make simple actions outside of your Init., but may only attack phases on or below your Init score…

10.

You: Again, I am watching the area and situation carefully as I slide over and pick up the phone.

JC: Scanning the area, I walk steadily toward the car and the old lady.

VR: I hold my ground ready to pounce in either direction.

GM: Ok…(jots notes down) …9.

You: Same as before.

GM: You pick up the phone…

You: Hello?

GM: A graveled voice demands “Get in that car NOW!!” and hangs up.

(All three players look at each other)

JC: Same as before, I am closing the distance.

 ]

GM: You are about 20 yards away now.

VR: Noticing a strange look on [You]’s face, I give a concerned look and yell out “What was that ?”

GM: Good, good…8.

You: Still holding the phone in shock, I look around to the balconies, rooftops, and standing cars. I am trying to ascertain who or where the someone is that called and is watching us.

GM: That will take you this phase and the next to look, plus a observation and Wits , Diff is 2.

You: (rolls) oh…man, I failed it.

JC: How close am I?

GM: You are about 10-15 yards away now, (rolling) and one of the punks notices you walking slower than most everyone else toward them…(rolls) he does not notice your gun though.

JC: I announce “Hey, leave that woman alone!!”

VR: I am getting confused between trying to keep up with [You] and his sudden paranoia, and JC’s potentially hostile situation … I walk faster over by JC. “ I got your back, man.”

GM: (smirks) 7.

You: Still looking…(rolls)…crap! All 6s…Absolute Failure…man I bought the farm.

GM: (laughing) You are so oblivious to what you are looking for, you almost miss a car barely clip you. You don’t even notice that your shoes are untied!

JC: I raise the gun now, and announce loud enough for them to hear, that they need to leave the lady alone and scram! I am aiming the gun at the main punk.

VR: I yell back to [You] “Lets Go!”

GM: The punks notice this and the head punk grins sadistically as he grabs the old lady by the hair and pounds her face twice. She screams out in pain, but her throat catches a second scream, as the wind gets knocked out of her. She is stunned and slows her assault with her purse. Phase 6.

You: (mutters) We’re not in Kansas anymore Toto… I hang up the phone, and noticing that things are getting heated with my comrades, I focus. By holding my necklace, I try to focus on slowing things down . I have a 2 in Time Ley Sphere, a 3 in focus, a 5 in Intelligence, and a 3 in spell theory.

GM: Spell Theory won’t help much here as you aren’t mixing more than one Ley Sphere… and there aren’t people paying attention to you.. caring more about what they can steal from storefronts and such. Roll your Target Number vs. a Diff of 3 to focus.

You: (rolls) Oh yeah, made it with an automatic success and a skill pip. [rolled a 1,1,and 3]

GM: You feel the ebb and flow of time easily run through your hair, fingers, eyes, and skin.

You are a part of the multi-lateral stream as much as it is a part of you. JC?

JC: I continue to aim at the leader. “Back off before I drill ya!”

GM: He mocks you and slams her head into the body of the car repeatedly as the other punks are busy accosting other rioters and causing general malice.

VR: Jogging up to the old lady to see if I can help her out in some way.

GM: you are about 5 feet from the woman, VR, in between JC and his gun; and the punk. Phase 5.

...

JC: I fire at the lead punk!

GM: Roll your firearms and Agility…add a specialty if you have it… Diff is 3.

JC: (rolls) … Oh My god!!!
